The Emily Chesley Reading Circle announces with great pride,
the first winner of The Annual Dr. Maximilian Tundra Memorial Poetry and
Short Speculative Fiction Contest. Mr. Scott Hill's entry, The
Transcript of Eldred Thunk was deemed the most "Chesleyan" of
short stories, and received unanimous acclaim as the winner of this year's
Tundra Prize. Set in Freakinswadian London, The Transcript of Eldred
Thunk has all the hallmarks of great Chesleyan literature: parody
of Victorian morals, whist, and funny nicknames. David "Flyboy" Lurie, said: "Eldred Thunk was
both clever and rude (a fine balance as Vikram Seth, or some other prodigious
writer once wrote) while being funny too, got my #1 vote." John Sloan, Thuder Gott of Cyber Space, exclaimed: "Very
funny ending. A nice Victorian manners piece with a lewd punchline; this
one was true to the spirit of the Emily Chesley Reading Circle. Nice but
naughty. Good fun." Mac "Foothills" Ruddock, describe the story as: "a terse examination of man's basic indignity to man. I laughed. I cried. Wagha, wah..." Mark A. Rayner, Esquire, pronounced Thunk the funniest thing he'd read since he last looked at his financial portfolio: "I laughed 'till Guinness shot out my nose." Dr. Michael Watson, the member formerly known as "Panties",
summed it all up when he pronounced Thunk: "the clear winner." Also, a Laudable Mention was awarded to Dr. Paul
Suttie for his excellent short story, Generation.
No other prizes were awarded in either category. Look for both The Transcript of Eldred Thunk and Generation in The Meanderings of the Emily Chesley Reading Circle (annual), in August of 2003.
